My voice cracks when I (try) to sing. Do singing lessons fix this, or is it just how it is? I dont need to be able to sing but it would be a nice skill to add to my resume.

I don't think lessons are ever a bad idea though.

For the last 10 years or so I have been to Jazz Summerschool and every year they have compulsory singing - for all the instrumentalists - it's a great way to improve your playing/improvising.
A lot of the people on the course are sceptical initially, but usually end up enjoying it and wanting to do more. You don't have to be a great singer to get a lot out of singing and as I was saying it can help your playing in all sorts of ways, as well as being good practice for sight reading.
So I know I sing in the bass range and it is great to sing stuff written in bass clef - I know that if I tried to strain to sing higher my voice wouldn't sound so good - so there is scope for lessons to help.

If you are singing a song where your voice cracks, you will have to convince the band to change the key, or someone else will have to sing. Or sing songs best suited for your range. (Think Bob Dylan.)
Your profile doesn't indicate your age; if you are young, it could be your voice is still undergoing changes. Just go with the flow, and find a coach to at least listen to you sing, and analyze what you should be doing.
Good luck.

I'm taking lessons from a really good teacher who uses the "bel canto" technique. I'm astonished at the improvement. I'm sure some would disagree, but I don't think you can learn this from CDs or DVDs. You need a good trained teacher (not just a voice coach) who will really listen to your voice and make proper corrections. A bad teacher can really mess you up. See if you can find a college with a good music program near you and see if you can hook up with a grad student in voice. They are always looking for students. Don't stress about learning classical technique. It all translates to rock and other styles. |
