Slide?

So I'll admit it: I'm kind of envious of a guitar tone. For as long as I can remember, I've loved two things: bass guitar and slide (blues) guitar. I have played bass for 6 years now, and I would really like to try to learn my other love.

As of right now my guitar skills are limited; I know how to play a 2-octave major scale, I know basic chords (G, C, D, Dm, A, Am, E, Em, F) and I know how to barre major and minors on the two lowest strings.

I understand this doesn't mean too much as most slide players tune in open E and G, so I'll have to relearn positions.

So where now? Any advice on where to start with my slide guitar endeavor. I know slide is a rather limiting aspect of guitar, but I would like to incorporate slide in as many styles as I can.

This book has been around for a long time (at least 25-30 years) and is the best one I've seen. It covers just about everything you want to know to start out on acoustic and electric guitar in the common tunings. It also covers some slide in standard tuning.

Open tunings are a slide players best friend.

Past learning alternate tuning fingerings the best thing I can suggest is just listening to slide players for inspiration and try to mimic what they do.

Any guitar suggestions?

Right now I'm playing a Danelectro 63 and am looking at maybe getting an inexpensive resonator for an acoustic.

My favorite players are Mississippi Fred McDowell and Duane Allman, if this helps.
