Slug mucus: my new secret weapon

Sign in to disble this ad
It was 4 AM and I was wandering around my house, cleaning up, getting things in order, petting my cat, taking breaks to play bass. All good things .

I realized I hadn't collected the mail from yesterday. I walk outside. The air is humid and the ground is heavy with dew. I feel like I'm in a jungle. As a result, there's a lot of bugs and wildlife around. I look down and see a stick. For no apparent reason, I decide to pick it up. As my fingers grasp the stick, I feel it squirm. My hand slips off the "stick." I realize it's actually a slug and it's coated the tips of my right hand in mucus.

I go in to wash it off because I can't handle mail like that, it's indecent . I scrub and scrub my hand with water, water and soap, it's not coming off. NONE of it is coming off. I dry my hands and try to get it off with a paper towel. Nothing. It was as if the slippery stuff was affixed to my hands.

And then I got an idea to try playing bass with it

It was AMAZING. It was almost like having callouses suddenly appear on my hands. My fingers slid effortlessly over the strings. I could barely feel myself plucking, and the mucus didn't come off on the strings.

I actually ended up getting the stuff off with a chisel.

So uh... you know, slug mucus. It's the stuff.

While I can't chime in on the mucus playability aspect, I have stepped on slugs a couple times accidently: literally the most spine tingling thing ever.

Last time I tried to wash slug mucus off my hands, it became a foamlike substance that seemed to expand according to the amount of water I applied. Not something to approach an instrument with. I guess we have different slugs over here: the OP seems to have hit the legendary Limax Bassus, never seen in Europe, but present in the tales of several American Indian legends, like the one about "The papoose who wanted to play an instrument that was too big for him".

I'd never touch one, but they're fun to melt with table salt.

Are they made of ice? Ice isn't slimy.

Wow. How old are you? Have you never heard of putting salt on a slug?

What the salt does is essentially dehydrate the poor bastard. See a humorous (but quite correct) explanation here: http://www.straightdope.com/columns/...-up-and-scream

Take note of the 'beer-in-a-pie-tin' trap.

Slugs are definitely closer to (some) humans than we think: it's only a matter of tin size (and shape).
