Small guitar amps?

Sign in to disble this ad
Ok, after getting a bass rig sorted, its time to upgrade from the poor 30w SS combo that I have for guitar.

I'm thinking all-valve, but cheap. I may settle for hybrid if I have to. It will be mostly home practice, maybe some rehersals with drummer and bassist.

I'm not after ultra high-gain metal tone, just nice cleans and decent overdrive.

Preferably under 300 pounds (with a little bit of allowance), can be in combo or head-cab form.

I was thinking:

Epiphone Valve Senior (20w all valve) with Orange PPC112 cab.

Vox AC4 (4w all valve) with Orange PPC112 cab.

Epiphone Valve Junior Hotrod (5w all valve) with Orange PPC112 cab.

Vox AC15VR combo (15w hybrid)

So, fire me some suggestions!

As far as small tube practice amps. I like the blues jr and the hot rod deluxe by fender. If you wanna get a little crazy you could look up a matchless. They are pretty awesome

Those Fenders look badass! I would, but they are way above my budget will any of the above suggestions keep up with a drummer?

I gig with the Blues Jr. With a little PA bump, I usually don't get past 5-6 on the pre-amp...Tone is killer.

I've giged with both and they both held there own, but the hot rod deluxe had a lot more omph. You can usually get those used pretty cheap

I would get used, trouble is, I have 235 pounds credit at my local music shop, so I have to buy new

I hate modelling amps, I don't really want another solidstate. I would settle for hybrid if I absolutely had to. I would strongly prefer all-valve.

I wouldn't mind enough wattage for practicing or small pub gigs.

Would an Epi Valve Senior be any good? I heard they are discontinued... But 20w all valve doesn't seem too bad?

I have about 250 pounds to spend on either a head or combo. I will try pick up a used cab or run through my bass cab until I gather some more funds.

As always, any suggestions are welcome. Don't forget to have a peek at my list at the top

That's a GOOD price...I paid $99 for my VJr head NIB and thought that was a bargain (supposed to be around $120/130).

Valve junior is pretty cool and very cheap, and if you can find one, I love my 70's vibro champ. I bought mine for $250 USD a few years back. It's actually great for recording bass too, just plug in a 4ohm external cab and you get great warm vintage bass tone at a very moderate volume. It will not keep up with a loud drummer though with a guitar without breaking up, but the OD is pretty great (Layla solo, early ZZ Top...). I use mine as my bass practice amp too, but note, it does not like active basses, not one bit.

edit: Also had a tweed blues Jr for a while, it was really loud, but not as cool sounding as a champ, but still pretty good. Fender Pro Jr's are the jam too....

Fender bassman or twin reverb are my ideal amps (I don't own them). They're the type of amps that if you had either one you wouldn't have to get anything else. fender blues jr. has a great tone too but not as loud.

Vox vr30 is not bad. the od side has two modes, one with decent od & another is more metal. clean side is good. reverb included.
i prefer a little beefier but maybe because i'm bass-biased.
