Nope. It means the air is colder than the water. As the water evaporates, it forms a light misty fog that looks like smoke.

I learned that on "Deadliest Catch" Tuesday night.

If you're referring to the song by Deep Purple, I believe the lyrics were about a concert hall burning down in Switzerland.

Look at the lyrics. Someone set off some unplanned-for pyrotechnics (a flare gun, IIRC) during a Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention concert, and the venue that burned down was right on the edge of a lake. Hence, smoke on the water, and fire in the sky.

Apparently a true story, and the guys from Deep Purple were there to witness it.

Having said that, I think the lyrics were written specifically to imply that it was a song about marijuana usage.

some guy in my year was taking the piss out of my friends and I(because we were musicians)
and he claimed that he could "play smoke on the water in e flat double minor with triple power chords" on his "gibson SG-36"

every time i hear smoke on the water i remember him saying that. I still laugh to this day

You are right, kind of. It was a hotel not a concert hall. It caught fire because someone set off flair gun inside the hotel. Listen to the lyrics it tells the entire story of the fire.

The whole event took place just down the lake from here, on Lac Leman, often mistakenly called (as in the song) Lahe Geneva. It happened in Montreux, site of the Jazz Festival.

Go to http://map.search.ch

Select english and type in Montreux. You can see the town on the edge of the lake. More trivia.....La Tour de Pelty is where Shania Twain and her husband Mutt Lange live.

Type in Coppet and you can see where I live.

I knew a guy who had a drunk wonder up to him asking him to sing a Deep Purple song. He could remember the name, but he song a few lines:

Slow motion walter
The fire engine guy

Could have been an urban myth.

Space Truckin' might make them bad guys though.

The funny thing is, Deep Purple claim that this is the only song they ever wrote as filler... frankly it shows. But that's proof that if you want to write a catchy/pop song, don't get too complex.

Nice job with your lawn. You must really be mad at the guy who drove through it though!

I'm a bundle of nerves now!

I know I'm going to have nightmares about guys falling into the storage vats at the Jack Daniels distillery, and no one finds out 'till after I have some.

I tell ya it just ain't fair!

Yes and no. I met Ian Gillan once a long time ago and he told me right after the incident he wrote the lyrics on a napkin at a restaurant. I don't think it had anything to do with marijuana.

Oh, please. Report back when you stop by Guitar Center and someone is not hacking out Smoke on the Water. Now that would be newsworthy.

Trade secret: They have a tape playing on loop called "Guitar Centre Ambience". It includes several renditions of Smoke on the Water, a couple of Stairway to Heaven, and several hours of pointless shredding.
