So a cat peed on my case

Sign in to disble this ad
OK, dig this. I was at a bluegrass jam and I threw my case in a corner. The owner of the house has a cat. Evidently the cat go REAL comfortable in my case and now I have this horrible cat urine smell everywhere I take my bass (older Kay upright). The case is a padded heavy duty nylon job...kinda like a huge gig bag. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get rid of the smell. Obviously I can't throw this thing in the washing machine...The bass is my office with me right now and the stench is driving me CRAZY...Are there any products geared toward getting rid of the cat urine smell?

I bought a RIC 4003 off of Ebay once and when we opened it up in the office we just about passed out from a horrific smell of cigaratte smoke, urine and we quit speculating as to what else.

I got rid of the smells as follows:

1. Shop Vac it;
2. apply Febreeze daily and after its application; then
3. put the open case outdoors and keep a fan on it during the day so it gets scrubbed with fresh air. It took about seven days of this treatment.

Yeah, I was gonna suggest febreeze, and a bit of spot-cleaning with a good vinyl / fabric cleaner to get the actual pee out of it...just cos it don't fit in the machine don't mean you can't soap up that area and rinse it...

There are a series of products that are made for removing cat urine odors. They make a product that helps you identify the actual urine "stains" under a black UV light, then the treatment products that remove the odor. The most effective ones use active enzymes that break down the odor causing components in the urine. The enzymes are heat activated, so you mix some of the solution with warm water and apply to the areas where the urine has soaked in.

Go to PetsMart or any other large pet warehouse supply place and they should have waht you need. Locate the spots on the case and treat them. It may take multiple treatments, but it will definitely get rid of the odor. Unfortunately this won't be a workable solution for the bass itself, since you really have to saturate the areas with the liquid. For the bass, Febreeze may be your best bet, along with lots of airflow.

Thanks to all...I will stop by the petsmart on the way home tonight and see what I can find. I cannot believe how strong and nasty the smell is... I have not ever owned a cat (am allergic) and this is my first "exposure" to this kind of stank.

I actually use Nature's miracle at home for when my roomate's dog decides that my room is a more appealing bathroom than the back yard. Good stuff-- it really does work as advertised.

Why do you go around "marking" things in the house too ?

The best product for removing urine smell from things I've found is called Un-Duz-It. Expensive but worth it. I used to restore car interiors and that's what I used and it worked every time.

nice, but watch out. They usually neuter "animals" that exhibit "obnoxious male behavior"

This is a simple 2 step process.

Step 1: Get a new case

Step 2: Bury the cat in the old one.

DONE!

Ha... the only problem is good upright cases are a couple of hundred bucks. I don't know if that cat would warrant that expensive of a funeral!

Stick a fabric softener sheet or two in the case to make it smell "snuggle-fresh." Seriously, I did this to a nasty old gig bag and it helped alot.

Something else to try is "Simple Solution", which is a deodorizer that I've found in the pet superstores; PetsMart, etc.

Too Bad

I know cases are expensive but I doubt you will ever truly get rid of the smell. But for future reference if yu are going to be in that kind of situation again you may want to put some orange peel in a bit of cheese cloth and that should keep cats away from your case. They hate the smell of citrus fruit.

NJL is 100% correct. Nature's Miracle for CAT urine does infact work!!! It is enzyme based which is necessary to neutralize the ph of the urine. DO NOT BY ANY MEANS USE ANYTHING AMMONIA BASED. The Febreze, dryer sheets etc will help mask it, but the NM will eliminate it. Follow the directions. It may take several treatments, but it will do the job!
