So, the girlfriend has to work out of town every now and then. Tonight happens to be one of those nights. I putted around the house a while before I thought "Man, I have to get outta here and do something." I saw that "Anvil: The True Story of Anvil" was playing down the street. I wasn't feeling like dealing with anyone, so a movie on a quiet Monday night where I could melt in the back somewhere with a small tub of popcorn sounded perfect.
I got there, and two of the guys (the main two guys in the band) are there at a table, selling CDs and signing posters. Cool! I go to get some popcorn, and the guy ahead of me is asking strange questions for a movie... "Do you think I'll need earplugs." "Well, that's up to you," replied the popcorn selling dude. "It'll be louder then the movie."
Huh? What the...?
That guy leaves , and I ask the popcorn guy what he meant. He informs me that the band was going to play a short set immediately after the credits roll.
#$*#ing awesome!
The movie played (which was very, very good), then the band played.
Mind you, I am not a metal fan, but these guys were ~tight~. They sounded great. "Lipps" is a great frontman, and all three in the band are great players.
What an absolute trip, but so much fun, too!
If you get a chance, I highly recommend seeing the movie. I thought it was totally worth the $8.50, even if the band didn't play a set afterwards. In fact, I'm sure I'd see it again if I get the chance!
Anyone else happen to catch the movie? Did they play a set, too? |

Either way, fail. | Um. I think he was trying to be funny. (Fail #1) It seems like the unfunny joke was lost on you. (Double fail.) At least he tried to be funny. |

If the act has real talent, that always improves things.

I can't help but feel it's going to be like seeing Spinal Tap II...

I can't help but feel it's going to be like seeing Spinal Tap II... | Sort of, but it's really not at the same time. These guys are a very real band. It didn't have any of the crazy "cucumber in the pants" or the "Stonehenge endangered of being crushed by a dwarf," or anything really crazy like that. It was much more touching, as the two main guys are like brothers and have such a long history together.
It was also sort of heartbreaking, like when they're talking to a promoter who's giving them the "sound's awesome - but we have to talk to the guys and see if you're right for our company!" The guys are all pumped up, and the whole time you're thinking "there's no way they're getting a call back."
Great story, and it's really about an incredibly enduring friendship, following a dream, and the human spirit that keeps persisting in the face of hardships.
Really great film overall, even for non-musicians. |
