So I go into manny's music.....

Sign in to disble this ad
which happens to be owned by Sam Ash, and the kid sales person follows me up to the bass department. "Do you have any Bongo basses?", I ask. His response, in a salesmanlike drone, "No. We don't stock them. I hear a lot of bad things about those basses."

He obviously had no idea who he was talking to. I (who is generally incredibly polite and kind) looked him directly in the eye and said, "Don't waste another ounce of your breath. I am completely and totally obsessed with that bass, I've played them, and I am getting one."

He then said, "Did you ever check out a Sterling, they're really nice basses you know".

My adrenaline flowed. I felt like this guy wanted to first talk badly about, and then try to sell me - my own family. I really felt as if he were trying to tell me about my own mother and father. Do I get the bass geek award yet????

Of course I had to ask him what it was he heard that was bad about the bongo. He said that people say the body is awkward and uncomfortable. I'm sure he heard this from all the people he knows who have them.

I know this dumb-ass stuff has been posted a million times, but when are these salespeople going to learn to listen to a customer before openeing thier dumb mouths. How bout asking me what kind of bass I play? Why I'm interested in a bongo? What I know and don't know about them? Ask a few freaking questions before making assumptions and saying things that make ultra sensitive, egotistical, bass people like myself very upset and angry.

That's why I go to Target!

Hey Joe, do they still have that $1400 Alembic w/ the broken neck?

In addition, you should know what to expect from Manny's.

If any... Rudy's or Joey G's is the place to be!

Just a note

Just wait until the DB guys come in and put in their two cents. I'm sure KRIS FITZINMYPOCKET and ED FUQUESUPEVERBODY'SNAME will have strong opinions regarding the Bongo.

I don't know why everyone hates on the Bongo. Most of the hate comes from people who haven't even played one.

I totally love my Sapphire black booty Bongo bass. It will be mine forever.

Once you got past the looks you realized that WillPlay's bongo sounds huge! Really sweet tone.

I never had a chance to touch it, bongo-hogs!

Next time, you bring the bongo, and I'll bring the Charmin...

Joe, does this mean you've robbed a bank or had an unexpected lottery win?

no. just trying to tease myself. thankfully, only guitar center carries them around here, and there aren't any too close to me.

didn't see any alembics, BUT, saw a couple of basses that were 2 to 5000 dollars. foderas and yamahas. picked a couple up, put em right back down. then picked up stingrays and sterlings. MM basses are my basses. nothing can beat them IMO. feel, sound, price. i've a feeling i've found my bass manufacturer for life.

As I did so, a Kubiki fell from a perch onto me. Good thing those only weigh a couple pounds.

I took this as a very bad sign and put both basses back. Few things look uglier to my eyes than a Kubiki - this one was pink to boot - and if God sends one crashing down on me for merely holding a Bongo, it's enough for me to know it isn't meant for me.

At least I (almost) tried.
Yeah, omens like that are bad. I was supposed to get my first haircut in six months yesterday, but the shop burned to the ground on Saturday. So, no haircut for me.

Maybe the Kubiki got jealous--it knows that you currently hold the Bongo in low regard, and it knew if you played it, you'd be firmly in the Bongo camp. The Kubiki wants you all for itself, SMASH.
