I'll start with my answers.. I personally have gone on a long journey where I've "evolved" my taste in some strange ways.. ways I'd never have expected as a 17 year old.

Back in my high school days I was strictly Classic Rock, Hard Rock, Metal and some "alternative" rock.. I still love those genres, but I've shifted much of my listening to Classical and Jazz in the past few years. 20+ years later, today I tend to listen to music more like in this order:

-Classical Baroque period (especially Bach, Antonio Vivaldi, Handel, Christoph Willibald Gluck, and other non-Baroque such as Bethoven, Mozart, etc.)

-Contemporary Jazz (ala George Benson, Pat Matheny, Stanley Clark, etc..)

-Classic Rock (ala Rush, Yes, Supertramp, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Manfred Mann, etc)

-R&B/Soul (old school, such as Kool and the Gang, and Parliament, Earth Wind and Fire, Rick James, etc..)

-Heavy Metal (ala Iron Maiden, Black Sabath, Deep Purple, older Metallica, etc. but not really into the new super metal of the past 10 years)

-50's music, Dion, Elvis, Chuck Berry, etc..

-Country Western (ala Hank Jr, and Charlie Danials, etc..)

-Blues (BB King, Muddy Waters, SRV, Robin Ford, etc..)

On the flip side..

Not liking Techno/Dance music, hip hop, or The "new Country" much these days.. or the super hard heavy metal...

I started out liking hard rock, moved onto metal. I still like metal, i mean metallica is my favourite band

When I started piano i started liking classical a bit more
and since I started playing bass (2 years ago) i started liking funk and jazz, mainly because of the bass.

I think what i play influences me the most

I really hate rap, techno, dance and hip-hop

Playing bass has certainly had an effect on my taste.. especially in the Jazz, Funk, Soul arena..

I would have never given those types of music serious listen as a 17 year old going to AC/DC and Scorpions concerts..

For many years, it's been progressive rock, fusion...

in recent years moving much more toward:
  • Ambient
  • Acid jazz
  • Avant-garde
  • Contemporary classical
  • Dub & reggae
  • Electronica
  • Groove
  • Trance
  • World

Don't care for country. Never did get into metal. Not into folk. Don't relate to the blues. Hate rap/hip-hop.

Soul, R&B & Gospel are OK. No big passion for 'em though...

The first 6 are in order, but depending on the day, the wind, the moon the order can switch pretty readily. The last part of the list are favorites, but in no particular order.
  1. classic rock (Beatles, Cream, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin ...)
  2. alternative pop/rock (Cure, English Beat, the Jam, XTC, REM et al.)
  3. folk rock (CSNY, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell ...)
  4. jam fusion (Grateful Dead, Phish, MMW, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones...)
  5. progressive rock (Rush, Yes, ELP, King Crimson ...)
  6. punk (Ramones, Sex Pistols, the Clash ...)
    --------------------
  7. jazz fusion (Stanley Clarke, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Weather Report, ...)
  8. standard jazz (Coultrane, Miles, Dizzy, ...)
  9. swing jazz/big band (Benny Goodman Orchestra- only big band name I can recall off the top of my head...)
  10. symphonic orchestra (Bizet, Copland, Tchaicovski, Beethoven, Mozart ...)

First it was Metal exclusively, then I branched out through Electronica via Jungle and Drum N' Bass, and then pretty much everything else.

I can listen to some kinds of Music all day, but my only peaves are with New Country, Modern Jazz, most Hip-Hop (I'm more of a Turntableism fan), Soca, and the corporately outsourced garbage that is Pop.

lately i've been into prog/shred/metal or whatever you call it.
like Symphony X, Adagio, Rusty Cooley, Jason Becker, Malmsteen, John Petrucci(and some Dream Theater), etc...

I'm actually about to start some lessons with Rusty Cooley soon. Hopefully he can really help me learn that style of music.

I started on Pop, Disco, Soul and Jazz in the early 70s as a young child. We rarely had TV on, but had a Killer HiFi with a switch box that allowed us to listen in either the upstairs, downstairs or both. Mom was mostly listening to Pop and Soul all day, Dad was Disco and Jazz with a little classic rock now and again in the evening.

My first music of my own was a garage sale box of about 80 45rpm singles... mostly late 50s through late 60s stuff. I was maybe 6. I eventually moved to 8 track at 9 years old and I remember getting a mono player and 3 tapes for my b'day in 79... Kool & the gang "Lady's Night", Earth, Wind & Fire "I Am" and Andy Gibb "Shadow Dancing"... I wore all 3 out Rollerskating that summer

The next year I discovered Black Sabbath and started playing bass....

I went:

Metal
Alternative
grunge
acid jazz

to now where I listen to EVERYTHING I can, but mainly jazz that grooves not swings... older R&B and Soul (some new cats too)... jam... and I have a soft spot for Female singer/songwriters

what style

OK I like older metal; but blues is good. I play in a southern rock tribute band. S.R. uses a lot of different styles,so I get to try a lot of stuff out! The drummers played just about everything; sometimes he compliments me on "playing this or that" and I'm not aware I was doing anything special..its all feel.I played a lot of different styles while I was learning;really can't say I've mastered any but it gives me a lot of ideas to have fun with! Nothing like breaking into a boogie-woogie with the keyboard player during a break in a Skynyrd tune.

In terms of listening, everything for the most part, except anything that's blatantly poppy.

In terms of playing (in general order):
-Death Metal
-Prog Metal / Rock
-Shred Metal (getting there with the speed, watch out )
-Fusion
-Jazz
-Funk (love pickstyle funk on a fretless)
-Anything else really, though I'm not a fan of roots on quarters or following basic guitar lines, or again, anything that's ultra-pop.

With my old band (I should start saying my older band because my current band may have just died.) we did what would have happened if Stevie Ray Vaughan had joined Pink Floyd.

So I like that kind of stuff a LOT. I would say that "That kind of stuff' would include: Blues, Classic Rock, Alternative, and Jazz...in about that order.

Since then I like more Jazz than I used to. Mostly the fusion stuff from the '70's, but old school as well.

My favorite rock stuff lately tends to be stuff that horrifies my son, like '70's and '80's prog. But I still like a lot of old rock. From the Beatles to Skynyrd.

And what bassist doesn't dig Motown?

For the last twenty or so years I've really been into acoustic folk music. It's like country music without the irritating twangs. Wouldn't "The Irritating Twangs" be a great name for a country band?

I also love a lot of world music. My favorite would probably be South African mpaqanqa music, like Johnny Clegg and Savuka. I also like a lot of stuff from South America and other parts of Africa ( like Inti-Illimani,and Huayucaltia and Angelique Kidjo) And of course I am genetically forced to dig Celtic music. This very weekend I saw a performance by a Celtic-Rock fusion band with the unlikely name "Enter the Haggis". They put on a great show and I truly dug the music.
