So what's a cool band name??

had this discussion while trying to come up with a name for my current band. so what makes a really cool band name. i would've preferred to name the band after myself, but that didn't work. here were some names we came up with:

big tex
jagged edge
tattered
binge
ripped
vapor
six
texas psycho
all about me
nice guy eddie
freakin genius
chaka mad
drunk trio

so does a band name really matter. if you're making good music - people will come out to hear you play. but if you suck, the best name in the world won't help.

You know a good band name when you hear it, but some just come with connotations attached to them. These are the admittedly arbitrary preconceived notions that I have about the following band names.

"Nice Guy Eddie" and "All About Me" scream "band of 30-somethings who are only okay and play mostly covers but throw in one or two songs that the guitar player wrote about breaking up with his live-in girlfriend".

"Jagged Edge", "Ripped", "Tattered" and "Binge" sound like most of the "heavy rock chugga chugga" kind of band names.

"Drunk Trio" is basically just a definition of "Alkaline Trio", and they're already a band. "Vapor" sounds like a prog rock band, though "Vapor of the Distant Cataclysm" is even more prog and therefore much cooler. "Freakin Genius" is too Family Guy and gimmick band names are never good for anyone.

"Big Tex" sounds like a "Big 'n Rich" cover band, though "Texas Psycho" is kinda cool. "Chaka Mad" is okay too, but I'm not crazy about it. "Six" is okay, but there's already a band called "Three" (or "3"), though apparently sequenced band names are acceptable as we have Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday all represented.

Bands names are a black art, and feel free to disagree with everything I said, etc. etc., disclaimer disclaimer.

Why not combine a few? "Six Texas Binge" or "Big Tex Binge" or "Vapor Binge"

edit: See, even those kind of suck. It's hard. When the right one hits you'll know.

what kind of music do you play? base the name of that.

the genre has certain connotations -

rock = tough and cool

jazz = classy and nice.

metal = evil and mispelled ( KRA-Z)

pop = your name

blues = "insert name here" trio

R&b/Funk = something strange and funky, yet cool

country = hillbilly it up

punk - mundane sounding and counterculture

hip-hop/rap - pimp your name out

Those are all bad, keep thinking. Sometimes adding an unexpected word helps. While "Ripped" is a bad band name, Sonic Youth's last album "Rather Ripped" is a great name, I think. So try some addition. "Tattered Flag" and "Oxygen Binge" for example are much better names than just "Tattered" and "Binge."
