Software for making dance/electronica?

does anyone know of any good software that is geared towards creating this sort of music? I remember playimg MTV music creator on the PS1, and it was a lot of fun. But I would like to seriously get into some real electronic music.

FLStudio (formerly Fruityloops) is kinda geared towards electronica. There's also Reason.

I'll have to check those out...

Are there any open source ones? I like using open source if possible.

Fruityloops was what I was going to recommend, I used it for a while and it was pretty easy and had some good sounds. They have a demo if you want to check it out.

And here's a link to their main site.

Reason scores big points for the cool factor, but it is kind of pricey.

If you check out Hitsquad you can find all manners of programs to make music. You can probably find an all-in-one program for free, or piece together something.

I use Cubase. I like the sequencer and other aspects of the program, though there are some things I'm not crazy about.

Also, you can check the Harmony Central forums. They always have good stuff there.

Some cool VST links

This is a thread I made a little while ago - if you get into using VST instruments, you'll find some cool free stuff in there.

Fruityloops, Reason, and Sonic Foundry's Acid. I've used Acid a bit and it's really fun and quite intuitive, especially if you've used any other Sonic Foundry products (Vegas Audio, etc.)

Reason has some very good sounding soft synths. however, i'll also suggest Project5 because of how easy it is to use.

If you've got a Mac, GarageBand is quite good with this.

Fuity Loops (aka FLstudio) is huge. There is a TON to it. I feel lost!

Try a tracker style program. Psycle might be the quickest to get started with, since it uses synths rather than samples like most trackers do.

No problem. There are a lot of other trackers too, so if you don't quite like the interface or would prefer something sample-based, look around.

If I could think of an ideal interface it would be like guitar pro but for synths.

If you're on a Mac there's always Garageband (free).

Reason, Rebirth, Ableton Live, any of the oldskool mod/tracking programs, etc.
