Ok. my instrument cord, has a gash in it (dont know how it got there). and the wire is split apart. Can I just solder them back together? then tape the gash back together?

Is the cable cut in two, or just the jacket is ripped and the core wire is compromised? You *can* fix it, but it'll prolly be prone to failure

If you're goin the "ghetto" route like this, you could do worse than to get a crimp solderless connector from Radio Shack, fit both ends in, crmip to make constant, then wrap the whole shebang with electrical tape.

No guarantee there won't be any hum.

Instrument cable is core and shield. If the core is broke, then the shield is compromised.

Good luck any which way.

If it's right below the plug, just cut it, unsolder the plug, from the scrap end, and re-solder it on to the cable. You probably won't notice it being an inch or so shorter.
