Solo bass songs for college talent show?

Sign in to disble this ad
So my college is holding a talent show, and I was thinking of playing bass for it... the only problem is there's not a lot of bass-specific songs (other than a few like "Amerika"). Any song/style recommendations? Any ideas at all will help.

My school is doing the same thing, though my band is doing Rush's A Farewell to Kings.

There's a guy (I think he has an account on here) called Dmanlamius76 who does some cool solo bass stuff. Here a couple of links for you:

I don't imagine you would be able to find sheets or tabs for his stuff, but those pieces should be pretty easy to work out.
All the best.

Portrait Of Tracy

Or you could learn one of the Bach Cello pieces on bass...

'U Can't Hold No Groove' by victor wooten, that's a great one. it's a good song for anyone to learn because it requires so many different techniques it'll get your chops in line for a lot of stuff

I always thought that an adaptation of Edger Winter's Frankenstein would make a great solo bass song...

+1

Portrait of Tracy is awesome, even for non-bassist.

Bach suites sounds good on the electric bass. I've done the courante from the 2nd suite some years ago, and I worked a little on the Prelude from the 4th, both are really cool.

Stu Hamm? Country Music... maybe Linas and Lucy?
Stanley Clarke School Days... Hot Fun?
Jaco Chromatic Fantasy
or hey....here's an idea....WRITE something original! Not like the crowd is going to revel in the accuracy with which you play Portrait of Tracy, 99% won't know it. Write your own piece, and go out and hammer it.

What ever song you choose, it should be one that people know. Many years ago when I was in highschool, a friend played Mood For a Day (from Yes Fragile) on guitar...played it perfectly with feeling. People knew Roundabout from that album but probably not much more and his crowd response was underwhelming.
