Something I Haven't Done Before Musically

Well, the "band" scene hasn't been happening for me lately and I started to play less and less. Just lost the fire in me so to speak. My future with music wasn't looking good. Then, on a dime, things changed.

I get a call out of the blue from a buddy of mine named Hawke. He runs a small video production company (http://taylorestudios.com) here in Tucson. He wants to know if I would be interested in doing a soundtrack for a 1/2 hour instructional DVD. Huh?!

I can honestly say that I had never even thought of doing such work. I always was in metal or punk type bands and he knew this. The reason I mention that is because the music has to have an Old West/John Wayne kinda flavor and I never play anything like it. I was excited at the prospect but just a little confused. Moving on...I called up the guitarist I work with and pitched the idea of it and he was interested as well so I contacted Hawke and said we would do it.

Let me tell you something, the little two minute intro piece of music we laid down today was the hardest music I have ever helped create in my life! Hopefully the customer likes what we have started and we get the go ahead to finish it up. I should know something Monday if it's good as is or if we need to make changes. (fingers crossed!)

Anyways, I just thought I would share my good fortune. Plus, to those of you that are thinking of quiting, don't give up! You just never know what lies around the corner!

Sorry for the long post!
Kelly

P.S. He said if we are interested he can send more work our way as well!

Awesome, I've had to stretch for soundtrack work too. I had to write a 60s psychedellic song... and I did a decent job. It was suppose to be purposely junky guitar, and fake british vocals. It was a stretch for sure, but it worked. Being in a film student area is fun.

Well, we heard back today and the customer likes it! I'll be recording my bass tracks today and hopefully we get it finished on time.

This is stressful but a heck of a lot of fun!

It was the same case for me, not many gigs, and i had couple of offers which turned out to be lots of fun. So far I've done couple of promo video soundtracks, training videos and after doing some songs for my kids school projects (Songs about environment, things that fly etc.) I had more parents paying me to do the same for their kids, so I've been doing kids music as well. It's nice to se your name in the credits as well.

I would LOVE to do film scoring.

Sometimes I'll put on a movie and mute the sound, and then switch on the keyboards and "play along" with the movie, reacting to what is happening onscreen.
