Hey guys, I am solo-ing at next June School Concert (I'm in grade 12), and I need some advice on picking out songs...
It is a year-end concert with all the concert bands and jazz bands, and it is in the school theater, so there's gonna be at least a thousand people there (parents and students)...
I got a green light on playing "A Night in Tunisia" - Victor Wooten version (its the third song on 'medley' by victor wooten on his A Show of Hands album) from my band teacher, but that song is only one minute long... I need another song or two to play! Preferably Jazz... and I gotta make this solo at least 3 minutes long!
No rush though, I got until next june.

While the song isn't a bass solo the intro is awesome and the song structure itself is very comfortable to solo over. And if you want something super-funky try Marcus Millers arrangement of Frankenstein.

i agree, a jaco song would be awesome, just make sure you get everything down with the song before you start in on a solo

I was looking for songs that people would recognize more. Does anyone have any other ideas?
Btw, I'm not that great at slapping
But I'm good at two-hand tapping, which I'm doing for Night in Tunisia.

| | | | Jaco(Teen Town, Portrait of Tracy, Donna Lee, Birdland), Wooten (may get to technical), Marcus Miller, Coltrane (anything), and try learning The Awakening solo by Les Claypool (youtube it). Also improv. Its always good.

People recognize it instantly and it is very appropriate for a high school concert (IMO). |

Play without distortion and it'll sound good enough for the oldies.
A cover of it if you haven't heard it: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=mHdidPb7THI |

I'd also recommend looking at Tears In Heaven by Jeff Berlin. That would be excellent. |

People might get pissed at me..
But keep the suggestions coming!
