Many people don't realize (and neither did I at first) that JPJ plays double stops Whole Lotta Love.

JPJ plays chords in several Led Zep songs. Off the top of my head is Heartbreaker, during the verse "Heartbreaker your time has come..." he is playing real thick chords.

I think a lot of guys don't play chords because unless the bass is recorded JUST right when you play a chord it causes the bass to come flying up front in the mix and a huge amount of low end jumps out. Playing live it sounds awesome, on records it can be a tricky bit to get right. At a studio I recorded a few albums years back the engineer insisted I play single notes in a few spots I had chords. I was initially upset but was glad I took his advice in the long run.

To clarify:
Chords=3 notes or more
Intervals=2 notes

The bass solo in Jethro Tull's Bouree has lots of cool intervals and implied chords
