I know Stevie Wonder and Victor Wooten have both used vocoders, but who are some more unknown people who have used this effect in a great way?
For me it's:
Bon Iver- Woods http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TBh-0oHm9Ak
This song has amazing growth and is just so beautiful. |

There's others on the Trans album but I can't think of them now.

Here is the lead singer (Charlie Barnes) of my band (Charlie Barnes and the Geekks) playing one of his songs in a solo/laptop/looping/beatboxing format, complete with vocoder harmonies. They start at around 1.20, and they are sprinkled throughout the track, with a particularly good breakdown at the 5.00 mark. Sorry for the shameless self-plug...

Acording to the sleeve notes, the first use of the Vocoder on a 'pop' record, if I remember correctly. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fSQz_LQ6Kak

What it does is takes your audio and digitally corrects it to a note on the chromatic scale, or even to a specific key. At less extreme settings it's used by everyone from country singers to rockers for correcting their generally weak sense of pitch, but the rappers like to dial it to maximum for that keyboardy effect.
A vocoder, OTOH, takes two input signals (such as a synth or guitar, and a microphone) and it uses the resonance of one signal to filter the other. So e.g. it will take the constantly-changing resonance of your voice as you speak or sing, and apply that control to a set of filters which will shape the keyboard or guitar sound into something that has the form of your speech or singing--but with the notes and tones of your instrument.
What's "better" about vocoders is they require artistry of both your vocal and instrumental performance, simultaneously--whereas with Auto-Tune, you can just jabber into a mic and it will spit out notes.
