Songs re-done better than the originals... post 'em here.

Sometimes you might come across an artist who has re-done a song so as to make it better than the original.

Such as this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=blK8g...eature=related

Any other examples where the original song is greatly improved?

two that come to mind are Rage Against the Machine covering The Ghost of Tom Joad, and Tool's version of No Quarter. Both add a musical gravity and heaviness to already lyrically heavy songs.

Devo's cover of "Satisfaction".

I never believed Mick Jagger when he sang it. I sure can believe this version.

I know I'll prolly get flamed for this, but I like this version of Smoke on the Water better than the original.

Mainly sound issues though, not much of a fan of Deep Purple's sound.

I've really been into Quietdrive's cover of Time After Time.

I tend to like a lot of redo's of Beatles songs. Nothing wrong with the originals, but hearing fresh remakes of classics can be really interesting.

I like the YES cover of Richie Havens' "No Opportunity Necessary, No Experience Needed".

Though I don't really like to call a cover superior to the original, Johnny Cash's version of Hurt is quite possibly one of the best things ever.

Funny you should mention that. The other day I was listening to some of Joe Cocker's re-makes of Beatles songs ("With A Little Help From My Friends" and "She Came In Through The Bathroom Window"). He did awesome versions of both of those.

But while listening, I was thinking, "Now here are some examples of songs that are great by both the original artists AND the one covering them". I can't say that one version is better than the other. And that's kind of rare because normally I'll strongly prefer one over another (original versus re-make).

Sort of an acquired taste but I love the Northern King's take on "We don't need another hero"...NK is or was, not sure, a foursome of Finnish metal dudes who took tunes and put a twist on them making them more metal-ish than what they were. This was Marco's little pet project for fun..started as a joke I think but ended up kinda cool.

er...Marco hates doing videos so he kinda hams it up on this...

System of a Down covering The Metro by Berlin. Not much of a comparison for me, System's is way better. They're cover of Snowblind isn't better than the original necessarily, but an awesome cover none the less.

I agree with what has been said of Joe Cocker doing Beatles tunes above.

And I also like Stevie ray Vaughan's version of Little Wing too. That is quite honestly one of my favorite instrumentals ever recorded.

But it comes to mind there are so many songs that fit the guidelines of what has been asked in this thread.

Anthrax has a whole CD out with covers and there is not a stinker on the whole CD (Attack of the Killer B's)

I like the Blues Brothers Versions of just about everything.

My mind id blank now, but there are sure to be many that will be listed yet.

Almost any Emmylou Harris cover. For example: Here, There, and Everywhere, Together Again or C'est La Vie
Sly and the Family Stone's version of Que Sera Sera
There must surely be some Grateful Dead covers that are top notch. I guess it would depend on the show.
Summer Breeze by the Isley Brothers

Oh yeah, I recently got the Jeff Beck live CD, Live at Ronnie Scott's.

My God, Tal is amazing on that album, everything about it is phenomenal, especially A Day in the Life, one of my favourite Beatles songs.

Devo covering the Rolling Stones' "Satisfaction" - fantastic - they took a song everyone knows and transformed it into something which was completely their own sound.
