| Songwriter's Union/Guild -- any thoughts?

Yesterday I showed one of my C&W songs to someone I might be working with in early 2012. He asked me what I think about songwriter (not musician) unions/guilds. I came up clueless, and promised I'd seek advice here if it didn't already exist. Any/all opinions welcome.
