Sound Man Blues
Hi, We have a trio.
Guitar (acoustic, electric, 12 string), Bass, Keyboards/guitar.
The son of one member handles mixing our sound, through a PA, using computer interfaces. We play in very small venues. Setup can take from 45 mins to two or three hours. Bass goes only through PA.
Sometimes I cannot hear the bass well, and sometimes the guitar player cannot hear himself well (voice and/or guitar).
When we bring that up we are told:
"band members cannot hear what the sound and mix is like in the audience, and that we must give control to Sound Man on creating that balance and the overall volume. This means a willingness to not jack up our head room in the middle of a song, to not glare when he adjusts the balance, and to not complain that it was off (as if we could hear it)."
Should I agree with or accept that statement? I see no harm in asking for more volume sometimes, or in turning up when it sounds low - believe me - none of us ever blast away with volume.
sorry - this should be under 'band management' - I don't know how to delete the post here. I have reposted it there.
It should probably actually be under "Live Sound": http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f203/
Wherever it winds up, the question is: what are you using for onstage monitors?
If it's 'Nothing' - Aha !
