Soundgarden VS Alice in Chains, your preference?

I was listening to some of the new material from both of these bands and I got the idea to poll and see which is the preferred band here on TB. Man is this a tough call. I'm leaning towards Alice In Chains, though I much prefer Ben Shepard's style to Mike Inez.

I prefer Soundgarden. Their music just seems to be more original to me, especially the odd-time stuff and the interesting tones they get. Not saying Alice In Chains isn't a good band though, they are a great band for sure, I just prefer Soundgarden.

Even though I'm in a Soundgarden tribute.....
Alice In Chains.
Soundgrden/AIC double bill tour this year would be cool.......if it could happen...
Heres a new track from AIC called "Hollow"...

SoundGarden's "Down on the Upside" has got some awesome tracks on it. :bassist:

Soundgarden trumps all bands in my books, including Zeppelin. Love AIC too, but they don't rock me like Soundgarden do. After 14 years apart they managed to record an album that's as good as any SG album, IMO.

Hmmm tough one.. but I'm gonna go with AIC.. Facelift and Dirt cassettes were in my Walkman alot in the early 90's lol. Plus I saw AIC in 93 at Lollapolloza , man what a great show that was. Primus came on right after AIC and Jerry came out and jammed with Les and crew on Master Of Puppets. Hah man I miss the 90's =/

Amen to that!

Alice in Chains.

BassPlayer900 01-16-2013 02:02 PM

I prefer Soundgarden, although that mostly has to do with the fact that I'm more familiar with their music than AIC's. I like their use of odd time signatures, their raw sound, and their amazing riffs. Everyone in that band is awesome!

Tituscrow 01-16-2013 02:03 PM

Not even close. Alice In Chains every time, hands down.

A million times +1!!

stingray2112 01-16-2013 02:08 PM

Alice in Chains. I've never been a big fan of Soundgarden.

tdub0199 01-16-2013 02:13 PM

AIC for me...

SunnBass 01-16-2013 02:16 PM

Neither.

nicoli 01-16-2013 02:28 PM

Carrots for me... not a huge fan of either band despite the '90s in theory being my musical appreciation formative years.

I do own some Soundgarden and don't mind them every now and then. I never really 'got' AIC though.

Good man :)

To justify my choice...no doubt Chris Cornell had some killer vocal chops, and I also dug his work with Audioslave, but the truth is, the Staley/Cantrell songwriting and vocal partnership was peerless. I've yet to hear any rock vocals come close to consistently giving me chills, album after album.

Superunknown V Dirt? It's not a fair fight :)

Heaven Beside You

Right Turn (which Cornell guested on)

...10 songs off the top of my head that make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up and make me smile inside, all these years later.

And I could easily name you another 10, then another 10.

Can anyone do the same for Soundgarden? Don't get me wrong, I'm not a hater, I love Soundgarden, just nowhere near as much as AIC.

With no doubt at all, Soundgarden! Much more serious people, much better musicians, with much more interesting lyrics and versatility of styles. I liked AIC as well, back in the days, but cannot ever go back to it again, too shallow, apart from the interesting vocalizations I don't find much in their music. I also have a feeling that Soundgarden would all be capable of doing many other types of music, while Alice In Chains would struggle to go further from their own songs. I don't want to say anything bad about their musicianship, but I really think they're incomparable bands in terms of musical skills. And also, the sound production they had in their heyday was way better on the Soundgarden side... I did like AIC a lot as a teenager, but I think they lack depth, and especially when compared to Soundgarden.
