Paul Hinojos (current guitarist of Sparta and former bassist of At the Drive-in) has left Sparta in order to be the Mars Volta's "sound manipulator" replacing the late Jeremy Ward who overdosed a couple years ago. Interesting news. |

I don't know, I think ATDI is long gone
Didn't Paul fill in for Ward on a few dates in the months after his death? I wasn't sure, but I thought it was one of the ATDI family that took his place, but I could be wrong.

As far as the MV vs Sparta. I would agree that MV has the potential for longevity. Sparta plays to a specific audiance, meanwhile MV just plays. Fads fade away, but creative music always has a place somwhere. |

In my opinion, The Mars Volta has jumped the shark so to speak. They hit their creative peak around Frances the Mute and have since been just getting more progressive... and at the same time, redundant. Thats MY OPINION.
Sparta, on the other hand, got off to a slow start, but they're getting a bit of recognition now. Their new cd is SOLID, and they can probably drop the "emo" tag now that their music sounds less like Fugazi and more like... well, rock and roll.
Sparta's songwriting is getting much stronger while The Mars Volta's initial fire is dying down, but Sparta still hasn't reached the level of attention that TMV has... the battle continues.
Any other opinions? |

TMV was my favorite band before I bought their newest CD, Amputechture. I have all their albums, and IMO, Frances the Mute is the greatest piece of modern music I've ever heard. Deloused is good, and the Tremulant EP is great, too, but they both don't compare to Frances the Mute. They keep making changes to their band. They changed the bassist and added members for Deloused, and they changed bassists again, added some members, and stopped drugs for Frances the Mute. Now, the drummer changed for Amputechture (BAD IDEA). TMV had the best line-up with Frances, and unless they get that one back, I think the future is dim for the band. The new album sounds "thrown-together." The wonderful talent just seems like it vanished. Though music is still complicated, it sounds like they barely tried, and the vocals almost gave me headaches throughout the album. Cedric has about 5 tracks of singing going on almost eternally. As for Sparta, I like some of their stuff, but I haven't heard anything new. I still don't believe what I've heard of Sparta's music is better than TMV's new album, but I do believe that TMV should get their act together before they start to really suck. It's very sad that a band once so great is going to release such an album as Amputechture. |

Sparta didn't really impress me much from what I've heard of them, though I haven't head much.
And I can't stand ATDI. I bought two of their CDs (In-Casino-Out, Relationship of Command), on the advice of plenty of people who told me they were a lot better than TMV, one of my favorite bands. I honestly didnt find a single song on either CD that I like at all. I'm not totally sure what people see in them...

Any other opinions? | I think I am going to have to agree with you. I am definately a bigger fan of Sparta, though I have not heard the new album. I'll have to buy it tomorrow. Mars Volta just are not doing it for me. I really thought they were going be the better band. I really don't even care about them now. Sparta on the other hand seems have come into their own, which is great. It is interesting that Mars Volta is still a "bigger" band even though their stuff is way more obscure, who knows. If people still want My Chemical Romance, there are bound to be people who want more Mars Volta.
Its funny you mention Sparta dropping the whole "emo" thing, because I was thinking the same thing about Thursday's last album. I think that is a solid record too.
Well, interesting thread. I am sure both bands will stick around for a while. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
