how do you do the spit growls , also known as squeals. an example is http://youtube.com/watch?v=4RrGCKzUMS0 ( seconds 7 through 12 )
it sounds like it wouldn't hurt your throat too much, like gargling spit or something in a certain part of the throat |

There's a lady in LA making a lot of money teaching proffesionals to do this without damage, and with good reason. There's more than one death metal band that can't play two nights in a row because the singer can barely speak after a show.
See if you can find a vocal coach in your area rather than looking for examples on youtube, or you'll end up sounding like you smoke three packs a day after a few years, and lose your ability to sing actual notes. Just ask Max Cavalera or Phil Anselmo.

Like you said you can seriously damage your throat if you don't do it properly.
Oh yeah, and the vocal coach you were thinking of is Melissa Cross, she has a few dvds available called "The Zen of Screaming.
Check out her website here. Melissa Cross

I've been wracking my brain for months trying to remember that woman's name so I could get the DVD or contact her--my current vocal coach is excellent, but she admits her knowledge in that area is limited, so we're both interested. Thanks a HEAP!!!!

and why must you insult a whole style of singing? thats like saying blues is rubbish because the players dont play super fast.
and you dont need your mouth open too much when doing DM vocals
edit - and about melissa cross, id love to get lessons from her but they are $200 an hour, but i guess i should check out the dvd, even if i dont get anything out of it my bands singers probably will |

Get the DVD and learn it, then move on to the scream extra cd. I'm sure you'll get alot out of it if you actually practice and apply the stuff. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
