Looking to move my music into a more blues-rock genre, and I've heard that Stevie is great with that sound. Can I get some album recommendations, preferably some live ones? Also, any other artists similar to the genre (SRV, John Mayer Trio, etc.) that would be good? Thanks.

Thanks. | Don't limit yourself to just cd's. Watch his videos too.
CD's:
Texas Flood
Couldn't Stand the Weather
The Sky is Crying
In Step
Live at Carnegie Hall
DVD's
Live at El Mocambo
Live at Motreaux
Live from Austin, TX
Another blues-based band that's pretty good live is Los Lonely Boys.

Apparently, all of them!
Live Alive is a pretty decent live album. Personally I like the earlier stuff. I liked him best when he was on drugs. Same thing goes for Aerosmith too.
Texas Flood. Great album. Couldn't stand the Weather is a great one too, I think he was listening to Electric Lady Land while he was recording it, but there's nothing wrong with that. |

Also, as mentioned above, give a good listen to Los Lonely Boys. I think they are probably one of the premier groups in this category today and I doubt very many could argue with the amount of success they've had. They've recorded some of my favorite current bass grooves as well.

For SRV vids, my fav live vids were Austin City Limits (I think it's this one, but I don't remember, I saw it at a friends place), MTV unplugged (think you'll have to go on youtube for that) and the one with Albert King (check out this vid).
Here's another cool video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HA11xTad_bs
EDIT: I just remembererd another vid I found on youtube. This one's amazing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SEiMIMH0HRg

I'll reiterate my suggestion of Indigenous. Mato Nanji's playing and sound are very similar to SRV's. He's also got a great blues voice. Check out Indigenous - Things We Do and Live At Austin City Limits. Check out the song Eagle Heart. It's a great instrumental.

I also saw him on tour that year (the dual headliner tour with Jeff Beck - WHEW! - what a show!!!), and having seen him previously numerous times, I would say that he was 10 times better than I'd ever seen him.
For something else to consider in the blues side of things, I'd suggest anything by Robben Ford and the Blue Line. For us bassists, it's a tour de force from a master, Roscoe Beck, what a freakin' MONSTER blues bassist he is!

anyways, my fave CD is Live at Carnegie hall. Fave DVD is a toss up between Montreaux Jazz Festival or Live at the El Mocambo. That live version of "Texas Flood" he does at the El Mocambo is IMHO one of the top 5 musical performances of all time.
SRV is SRV. No one like him and for that style, even holds a candle IMO. Never gets old for me. And I've been listening to him for a loooong time. |
