Dont know about the DVD as I only have the book, which comes with two cd's. The book contains sheet music for some songs. The cd's have sections of songs played by well known bassists. The great thing about these cd's IMO, is that you can completely isolate the bass, thus hearing the lines clearly. AFAIK, the DVD is a general documentary type film, while the book deals more specifically with the bass and Jamerson.

In an "either or" situation, I'd say get the book, though the ideal thing would be to have both.

Hope this is of some help.

You should buy both IMO.

The book/CD package is a combination of biographical detail about Jamerson's life, a short analysis of his sound and style, and 49 part or full transcriptions of his bass lines recreated on teh CDs by famous bass players (eg Will Lee, Anthony Jackson, Rocco, Geddy Lee, Rocco, Gerald Veasley etc etc) in such a way that you can pan the bass out and have a playalong track or you can just listen to the bass.

The DVD is a film that was made in 2002 I think. THis is more about the Funk Brothers in general rather than just Jamerson. There's also some clips from a concert featuring the then surviving funk brothers (Bob Babbitt for one) with guest vocalists and others (vocalist include Ben Harper, Bootsy, etc).

As an addendum you should also check the deluxe version of teh CD soundtrack. There's loads of audio goodies on there...check it on Amazon (make sure it's the 2 CD pack though).

Hope that helps.
