Stands vs Hangers: Am I just paranoid?

I have this unshakable feeling that wall-hangers that hold a bass up by its head somehow strain the neck of the instrument and are inherently destructive and unstable...does that mean I'm crazy?

I felt that way until I kicked my first bass over walking by the stand. If the weight of the bass alone can damage the neck it would never hold up under string tension. Each string has about twice as many pounds of tension as your bass weighs. I love hangers and swear by them for my home. They also open up floor space.

Hangers

I agree with Big B. I use hanging guitar stands and have never had a problem. Too many times I've seen an instrument slip off "cradle stand".

Accidentally knocking over my Ibanez (fortunately a cheap one) proved to me that stands may not be so safe as I thought, either. Now I can't even get it in tune and haven't even bothered with it for years.

Hangers only for me.

Yeah, your crazy. Equipment should be able to take a beating. After I've dropped my amp and wrecked my car with my gear in it, I know this stuff will last.

I like my wall hanger its out of the way and I feel safe its there. The one in the floor stand I've knocked over a few times or caught my foot on the cord.

Plus, wall hangers LOOK cool, they effectively turn your bass into art.

My instruments are in the case when not being used. I don't like 'em being out there...in the elements unless I'm playing.

I use the Hercules Bass stands for my basses, they are like a hanger. So Hangers!

that's silly. Hangers are fine. Stands are fine when playing or at a gig - but hangers are best.

Nah.

And it's also important to only change one string at a time, and keep pressure on the neck while you do it so the neck doesn't flop around. And remember that only a pro can set intonation. Also, never use stainless rounds on a fretless.
