Starting a guitar/music club at my middle school

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey dudes and dudettes. I'm a science teacher at a middle school in Dallas. It's my first year so I'm not sure what kind of music program they have, if any. I really wanna start this club and teach the kids how to play and listen to music. That's the age I started, ya know.

My question is where can I go to try to get 20 or so acoustic guitars donated (assuming I don't have funding). It's an urban district, so I don't know if it's appropriate to ask the parents to shell out $100 for a beginner ax, even though they'd be getting the lessons for free; not to mention the safety and positive experience of an educational after-school program that the kids would actually dig.

Any thoughts?

Sometimes larger chain music stores will have community outreach programs, but you might get lucky with a mom and pop store.

If it's an after school program there are lots of avenues you could try for direct or indirect funding. I would recommend contacting a local Boys & Girls club type organization to see if they are interested in either working with you, or helping you get things figured out. When it comes to charity-type programs I think you'll find most have some knowledgable people willing to help others get on track who have similiar goals (kinda comes with the territory). Every city/county/state has different things available, so that'd probably be the best place to start.

of course I don't know much about it aside from that, just seems logical to me.
