steel wool on pickup

i was cleaning the frets of a newly acquired used bass...and i noticed that some of the little steel wool bits got onto the pickup of another bass with a musicman style pickup

i was under the impression that steel wool + pickups = dead pickup...and i'm sure some of it must have gotten inside too. is there a way to effectively get it off of the pickup or do i have a huge problem?

It's easy to get off the outside...a bit of not-so-sticky tape and yer all set. Can you see the coils to see if'n its a problem there?
