He's going into his sophmore year. He and his mom went to school this morning to get his schedule sorted out and he got to sign up for guitar class. So he's going to get a group lesson every day, with homework and everything.
We went to Sam Ash to look at guitars and at first he was looking at acoustics and then he asked to check out the electrics. He picked up an entry level Squier and was fiddling with it through a 15 watt Marshall amp with an 8 inch speaker. Well, you should have seen his face when he found the overdrive channel. Then I grabbed a whammy bar off another display and he was a goner.
So I step outside to talk to the wife on the cell and when I come back in, he has changed his mind and wants the acoustic again. I asked why, and he tells me that the acoustic guy convinced him he should go that way first because it's easy to play electric. If you make a mistake you can cover it up, and some other crap. I looked him in the eye and told him that was only half true. Yes, you can do that, but it is an advanced skill to do it well.
I asked him if he was going acoustic because he thought it was responsible or something, and he admitted that he thought that somehow it was the right choice to be making.
The other salesman we had been talking to asked him point blank if he would feel motivated to pick up the acoustic every day or if it was going to feel like work. I told him that making the "proper" choice was not going to help if he didn't play the thing. If he was going to be saying to himself, "I have to go practice with the acoustic" or "cool, I can go play with my electric", then he needed to consider that, because he wasn't going to get anywhere if practicing felt like work.
He said that there was no question he liked the electric more. At that point we bought a guitar and an amp and off we went.
He's been playing with it tonight and hasn't stopped smiling.
