Steve Stoutes Open Letter to The Grammy's

He's upset that Justin Beiber didn't get best new artist win. He feels that the grammy's has lost touch with pop music. And that lesser known artists should not win over more known artists

lol. is this guy for real?

esperanza spalding is one of the best artists, if not actually the best, to appear in any genre in decades. imo she is this generation's primary contribution to the legends book, destined to be remembered next to folks like herbie hancock and even stevie wonder.

can't wait to follow her career unfold, she's a very exciting artist and performer.

for once, in a very very rare gesture (probably accidental) of insight, the grammy's got it right this year.

Just proves how people are equating being an artist with most sales and not actually being a good musician....

"How is it that Justin Bieber, an artist that defines what it means to be a modern artist, did not win Best New Artist?"

Oh, Krishna help us all if that's what being a modern artist is about.

Well I disregard his opinion completely after this statement:

"How is it possible that in 2001 The Marshall Mathers LP — an album by Eminem that ushered in the Bob Dylan of our time — was beaten out by Steely Dan (no disrespect) for Album Of The Year"?

Seriously! I always considered Eminem to be the Weird Al of our time (no disrespect to Al) . . .

So in this guy's eyes, they should change the name of the grammy to "Most Popular New Artist" I guess. That will take all the subjectivity out of the equation, and we can simply base who excels in the music industry by album sales.

bieber is not an artist, is just a puppet that do what the producers and marketing people says and that is it, he's not a artist, what that guy is a puppeteer, and hes upset that the puppets did not win, instead a real artist, to him the the music is all about the industry not the art.

And the people that organize the Grammy's wonder why less and less people bother watching. I have a bit of a different take on this in that I am not going to hate on some little kid because he is famous (the kid actually does have "some" talent) and I am also not ready to say the Esperanza Spalding is a legend, she simply is not and has not been around long enough to have earned that label. That having been said I was delighted that she won the Best New Artist award; she clearly has more talent and potential for making great music than anyone else in that category.

Hmmm........interesting! I will say this though...........while I dig jazz and I dig Esperanza Spalding.........she is NOT a NEW artist! She had a cd released in 2005 and another in 2008.

Yeah, the Grammy thing totally confuses me. What does the award represent? The example of Steely Dan versus Eminem is a good one. Steely Dan in 2001.... I love them, but who besides 50+ year old white guys like me listens to a new Steely Dan album.

Esperanza Spalding. Again, love her, have all three CD's. But 'best new artist'... not new, and in a category that literally sells NOTHING at this point.

If you can be a 'best new artist' without virtually anyone (other than bassists) knowing who you are, then I would bet there is a newer and quite frankly more innovative artist somewhere out there who deserves it more.

I guess the only way I can make sense out of this is to put it in the context of a zillion 'one hit wonders' out there, and so much 'shifting sand' in the industry that no one (i.e., the grammy judges) can really keep up with what is going on.

Again, no offense to Esperanza... good bassist, great vocalist, and a decent writer.... but best new artist. Whew!

justin beber is a talented kid, no denying it.
and i'm sure he works his butt off, he's done more than most who complain about him.
but there will always be idiots like steve stouts.
it's really refreshing to know that art can make an impact over sensationalism, and the best thing about this controversy is that
a lot of people are going to check out esperanza.
this is a crappy situation, but it isn't going to hurt anyones record sales.
the fact that she is the best new artist proves all naysayers wrong.
just to add:
"how is it that Justin Bieber, an artist that defines what it means to be a modern artist, did not win Best New Artist?"
i believe steve is confusing best new artist with best new product.
