Strange goings on at E-Bay?

Sign in to disble this ad
I get my e-bay searches e-mailed to me and I put lots of things on my watch list just to see what they sell for, and to jump on them if they are under-bid (which almost never happens). The last year or so I have seen several no reserve auctions end with a winning bid, and then poof, the next day the seller has re-listed the exact same item, this time with a reserve on it, or a higher starting bid, or a buy-it-now. The re-list usually offers no explaination.

For example, there is an '83 Stingray on there now which was no reserve and the winning bid was $1725, good money if you ask me. The next day he has it re-listed with a BIN of $2299. What gives? Do sellers have the right to refuse to sell their item, even if it's a no reserve auction? Doesn't seem right to me.

I ran into a situation once where I bid on an item that was poorly listed, so nobody could find it in a search and I made out like a bandit (or so I thought). Then when I won, the seller gave me messages along the lines of "oh, I can't find the item" and "I found it, but it's really damaged". I got a refund, then saw the item relisted the next day with a reserve.

I gave up on getting into the ebay game a while ago. I do however purchase from eBay stores and never had many problems. The thrill and excitment of winning the bid is not for me anymore. Many times I felt that other bidders were driving up the bid and I don't like to give all the power to the seller. Sight unseen is one thing when you are dealing with the Mega Music Stores but while eBay might be ok for small inexpensive items, big priced items are better left alone ImO.............................

I just noticed this as well. It happend with a Ibanez Black Eagle Bass within the last week. Winning bid was about $1300 and it's back up with $1500 start.

Hi.

Normal auction behaviour if You ask me.

Happens all the time in real life, so why not in the internet auctions?

They get a buddy to bid it up if they think the price is too low. Or they do it themselves with a sock-puppet account.

Yeah, I was thinking this.

Or sometimes the winning bidder backs out.

Either way, the reason you see it immediately re-listed higher with a BIN or reserve is probably because the seller realizes they can't get what they want for the bass with a no-reserve auction. Too little interest, too few bidders to push it up to where they want it to be.

I bid on & won a speaker cab. at what was a pretty good price. I immediately PayPal-ed the money & made arrangements to pick up in a few days. A couple of days later, the seller came up with a weird story about eBay having "cancelled" his auction after-the-fact, because he had used the same photos from a prior auction, etc. I was pretty insistent that "A deal is a deal", & ended up paying cash on the spot, bypassing eBay/PayPal. I couldn't help wondering if maybe he'd had 2nd thoughts, that he might have gotten more for it.
