Strap for heavy bass?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi TB world,

I have a musicman 4 string, which (I think) is really heavy and after 2 - 3 hours of jamming my shoulder kills me. Following day I feel like I moved a refrigerator up the stairs.

I have a planet waves strap. But I am looking into something more comfortable. Maybe some kind of harness strap or something better.

Peace.

Like every thread about straps for heavy basses, I say The Comfort Strapp. I had a very heavy pre EB 'Ray, and one of my fretless basses is a very heavy chunk of limba, both way over 10 pounds. I've tried just about every strap I could get my hands on, including big thick 4" straps with sheepskin pads, the D'Addario Air Strap, the Neo-Tech bouncy thing, Levy's (great for guitar, but not so much for bass BTW), a knock-off copy of The Comfort Strapp. The only ones I use (I have three of them and haven't even looked at straps in about 10 years) are the three Comfort Strapps I've got.

They have enough bounce and padding to support the bass on my shoulder without so much bounce that the bass is moving. I can play just about any of my basses for a 4-hour gig without much shoulder stress. Hey, I'm 55 and have "guitar player slouch" so I still get some pain with heavy basses at the end of a long gig. But for my most commonly used instruments (all in the 9-9.5 range) I can play all night.

John

do some flys with dumbbells, some bench press, and rotational exercises and this will soon subside. Or, get a 3.5" or 4" Italia or Franklin Strap, and add a pad. Possibly a dual strap might help also.

I tried all possible straps, I have a serious back problem so my Music Man gave me few hard time, but at the end I feel the MONO Strap works best for me. Check this out!

Comfort Strapp great too but did not like how stretchy/bouncy is.

4hr gigs used to leave my shoulder aching, 'til I got the Comfort Strapp (based on recommendations from TalkBass). I've been very happy with it, and highly recommend it to anyone with a heavy bass playing long gigs.

I have the Neotech Mega bass strap and it works quite well. Reasonably priced too!
