Strap Height??

Sign in to disble this ad
I know some people like it high, some like it low, but I am not really sure what advantage there could possibly to having a super low strap...

How many people use a REALLY low strap... and why?

I keep mine in the middle. Tried it both high and low. I seem to be able to play better in the middle.

I find that neither of the extremes are very comfortable, so I have my bass pretty much resting on my hip, not rediculously low, but quite high at the same time.

I tried a jazz bass my friend had, and I was horrified at how low his strap was.. I could barely reach the frets... and I have a longer arm than him!

The bass slung 'round the kneecaps is a fashion statement.

I like it high for several reasons. First, it's easier to access the entire neck. Second, it's easier to mute the strings with my palm (I'm a pick player). Third, it minimizes bending at the wrist. I really don't care if it doesn't look stylish.

I keep it nice and high, like Mark King/Jonas Hellborg.

Why do I think this guy played a lot of bass while in the bathroom?

Ah, yes..twisting your entire upper body to be able to pluck a string looks soo awesome:

And this looks like it's more comfy and could also work pretty well in a marching band.

I guess I'm in the middle, like this fella:

Ergonomically speaking: wearing the bass down low means the fretting hand wrist will probably bend too much (depends on how the bass is held). Wearing the the bass up high means that the plucking hand wrist will bend too much.

So, that's why I wear mine in the middle. That said, I wouldn't presume to judge anyone else's preference. There's nothing wrong with fashion statements. Whatever works, works.

I'm a big fan of having my strap set so that the bass is in the same position when standing as sitting.

I wear mine about middle, as far as I'm concerned... The back of the bass is resting more or less against my stomach... Higher than Meev992 but lower than Mark King...

Much to my hard rockin' guitarist's chagrin. I'm not hard-rock enough for them, as far as position goes. whatever.

Over the last 18-20 years I have worn it all extremes and in the middle, but now I wear my bass very high because it makes fretting and various right hand techniques more accessible. This is the only bass subject I've ever agreed with Jeff Berlin on, and that one is completely coincidental and even accidental, I assure you.

That's a useful idea. Problem for me is that seated position places the bass too high -- my plucking hand wrist bends too much. So, I wear my bass a little lower and usually practice standing up.
