strap "ingraving"

Sign in to disble this ad
my guitarist has an amazingly comfortable leather strap that he picked up for like $7 at his local music shop. id like to get one too but i like my strap, its not so comfortable, but i have my own patches and pins and junk on it. i like it, because its me, it has things that define me on it.

if i get the thick leather cushiony one, would it be possible to stich or embed something into it?

im really big into spirals, and iv seen justin chancellor of tool with an imbeded spiral on his strap, but i havent seen it in stores or online anywhere so im assuming his is custom too.

if anybody else has seen anything like what i described feel free to share

You shouldn't have too much of a problem putting pins into leather, but you may need to create the hole instead of attempting to punch the needle on the pin through the leather. Depending on the leather, you might be able to sew patches on to the leather (again, you may have to pre punch the holes)- or you can take it to a shoe repair place.

Man, I like to define myself by who I am and what I do, not by stuff I can pin on an instrument strap.

Well.

Hmmm.

I used to work with leather a long time ago. You've got a few options:

1. Sew another piece of leather that's cut and dyed the way you want it to the strap. Generally this requires sewing, though it may be possible to glue it depending on how much stress the strap has to deal with. Since the leather design is going on top of an existing strap, it doesn't have to be thick at all and can be absolutely the thinnest leather available. This makes it much cheaper and simpler to deal with when cutting out.

And you can make some very complex designs.

2. Use leather paint to paint on the design. This can work pretty well if done right. Especially if done by an accomplished artist.

3. Tool the leather, i.e. punch designs right onto the leather strap.

Personally I'd suggest #2. You can probably find a local artist where you live that could do the actual work. Or you can cut out a stencil and then do it yourself, if you're careful enough. Keep in mind that most leather paints can be difficult to remove if you make a mistake, so you'd have to be careful.

I would DEFINATELY opt for punching the design into it and then taking leather paint or darker stain to put inside the dents. That's how high quality leather straps are ALL made.

Well "leather pain" ....

I'd suggest just using Google. The price depends on the quantity, source and whether or not you're going to use a *paint* or a *dye*. Generally paints are limited to the surface of the leather. Dyes penetrate into the leather. In retrospect you'll probably want to stick to dyes.

Haha! Good one! Even though it is spelled "flair", as well as OP "engraving" rather than "ingraving".
I AM the spell Nazi.

Yeah that is from the movie "Office Space" where the restaurant in which the worked, think "TGIF's", they had to wear at least 15 pieces of some items on them such as, pins, buttons, ie "flair"...
