Strap locks for the cash strapped

Not sure if this is the best location, but it seemed most logical to me.

I had heard that Grosch Beer replacement gaskets made good strap locks and it gave me the idea yesterday to go to Home Depot to see if they had any rubber washers or rubber small gaskets. They did! And they are known as "Fender" washers, go figure! Anyway, for 75 cents each, they work perfectly. I'll post a pic when I get a chance.

I've been thinking of something like this recently, just a way to screw my strap on my bass. Also BTW, which straplocks fit on a Fender without drilling, is it the Schallers? I think those are the ones that come on some factory installed.

On my Fender MIA Jazz ('62 RI, or AV as they are now known) I have a set of Dunlops that I got at GC a couple years ago. They work fine, and I don't remember having to do any drilling, but I can't swear to that...

a quick search yielded this video of how to install the strap lock. Looks like no drilling necessary

Al, these days you can pick-up Schallers at GC for $12.99 using price match, not really expensive.

How easy is it to get your strap on and off with the washers on?

Of course you can save even more money and fit the ultimate grunge strap-lock, duct/gaffa tape!

Get a couple of metal washers at Home Depot for $0.12 each. The strap isn't coming off though.

Been using the rubber washers as straplock for about a year and a half now myself. They work like a charm.

Hey Dave (Thunderitter), yes, the locks are pretty cheap, but I am really needing to not spend even that amount as things will be very tight for us this summer. So the rubber washers are the solution for now at least. I bought an extra one in case one rips in taking it on and off, but probably I will just leave the strap on. I have not tried to see how it fits in the case yet... But the washers go on and off pretty easily and did not seem very close to ripping at all...

I went to Home Depot. Believe it or not, I use a product called Fender Washers. They are made out of thick rubber, stretch to fit over a strap button very well, and they work. Fifty cents a piece!

The large washers are called "Fender" washers because they used to be used to mount car fenders on the car, back in the day that car parts were bolted on. The large diameter spread the pressure better.

I'm a Fender guy. I find them quite appropriately named for what I use them for!

Seriously, they work really well as straplocks.

So Schallers are a direct replacement? I see various videos on youtube of people drillling. Not that I can't operate a drill, just don't feel like it. I'd rather get rubber "fender" washers.

If the Dunlop screw easily fits, cool. If you feel like you're forcing it, stop. The screw can snap off. Drill the appropriate sized hole. I learned that the hard way.

While it's hard to argue with the economics of your strategy, I seriously think the investment -- both fiscal and in terms of time commitment & nutritional (sic) payoff -- of the Grolsch approach is well worth it!

And they really do make excellent strap-locks! I've got Grolsch washers on 3 of my basses.
