Strap Locks from Grolsch beer bottles

Sign in to disble this ad
Has anyone ever heard about using the gaskets from grolsch beer bottles to make strap locks. My new strap that I found has a tendency to come off the button when the cable is tucked behind it (unlike my old but very similar strap that I lost )

Anyway I'm going to buy some bottles tomorrow and give it a shot. Worst case scenario it doesn't work and I had to drink a couple of bottles of beer

I use them on everything. Although you can get them 20 for $1.89 at a local beer maker or from here for a bit more:

Yep, I've been doing that for years. As long as you're not trying to do flips or anything crazy they'll work fine. You can see them on my P bass in this pic.

Check your local hardware store, too. Friend of mine picked up some heavy rubber washers/grommets for about a quarter each. Lots of sizes and thicknesses to choose from, too.

But if the strap is now permanently bolted into the bass, how do you fit it in the case?

you don't need a case anymore, over your shoulder and off on the motorcycle you go, like prince in purple rain.
not only do grolsh beer bottles come with strap locks, but the ceramic tops are great joint stones.

It's not permanent. If your bass won't fit just pop the washers off and remove the strap. Easy.

From my understanding, wouldn't you need to unscrew the buttons everytime you wanted to put it into the case? Isnt it bass>strap>washer>button with this method or am I wrong?

I only just learned about the Grolsch rubber gasket trick a year ago, but now I have them on all my basses (except for the one that already had Dunlop StrapLocks). Fanstastically simple, effective idea.

The Grolsch washer fits over the button in the same fashion as the strap; i.e., you don't have to unscrew the button to remove the strap, right? It's just that the rubber gasket is tighter than a typical strap and so less likely to come off. But it slips over the button pretty effortlessly when you want to remove it.

OH ok, thats awesome. Still my biggest problem is that the button screws become loose inside the actual bass. I have tried wood chips and blue but it won't budge, so I think that Dunlop Flush Mounts are the way to go.

The little plastic tabs that come on loaf bread bags work the same way but you can pull them off any time you want.

It just lays on top of the bass. I used 2 inch sheet rock screws and some washers to lock my strap on my 86 MIJ. In hindsight I'm surprised I didn't split the wood but when you're 17 you don't think about those things.

Seriously? Can't drop $20 on Schallers or Dunlops for your $2000 bass?

Nothing wrong with trying to save a few bucks. Especially nowadays.

...quietly giggling to myself....and i thought i was the only one who appreciated / remembered that particular application.

glad you specified "ceramic"; i don't think they even have those in the U.S. anymore - it's some kind of plastic now.

I didn't care for the beer.

$9 will buy a 4 pack here = 2 sets of red rubber straplocks. $10 @ AllParts will buy you 2 sets of real Dunlop locking strap buttons. I've got more spare strapends than I care to count.

Bass>button>strap>washer. The washer is rubber, you just put it on the strap button after you attach the strap.

I like the beer, so it's not so much of a burden to stock up on "strap washers".
