Strap "tails"... how do you get your strap length right?

Not sure where to put this, so...

I'm pretty tall, 6' 4", close to 6' 5", but am pretty thin. Long arms, legs, etc... so it's been a royal PITA trying to get my strap length right. I have a Levy strap that I love, comfortable, and it looks good... however it took me forever to get the length right. When I played my Ibanez 5er all the time, I had it set at the highest loop and used the inside button hole (so it was as high as the strap could go.)

I recently switched to playing the Cowpoke all the time, so I had to go on a mission for proper length again with mixed results.

How do you guys with limited strap adjust-ability get them the right length? Also, what the hell is that piece called, I can't find any info when I try to search.

Personally I have 3 Straps for all 3 basses , a Dickies Strap, a LM strap, and a Onori, and all three of the i've ajusted fairly easily .. I usually expand the strap to the its longest then hook it up to the bass it is going ot to be used with and then pull the bass to were it is confortable and then ajust the strap accordingly

I usually adjust my strap length so that it sits at roughly the same level when I stand as when I sit. I'm pretty short (5 feet 5 inches) so if someone else grabs my bass it will choke them .

I play with my bass as low as possible.........usually halfway between my knee and waist.

Trying to find the perfect spot on my short scale mustang is a PITA.

I normally rest my thumb on the pickup, but it seems like my hand wants to be in the same place as it would be on a full scale, so I end up resting on the E and plucking between the pickup and the bridge. It's just been weird trying to find the right standing stance on the Mustang.

It's what I get when I copy Peter Hook instead of learning to hold my bass properly.
