Question Subwoofer vs mid woofer

Sign in to disble this ad
Well, My old speakers had 2 8" full range woofers, and I can't seem to find full range replacements, just subwoofers and mid woofers. I know subs are for low frequencies, and mids are for mids, but I don't know if subs will produce the mids I need. It seems like all stereo speakers have moved on to horns that cover mids and highs, and subwoofers to get lows, no more mid/low woofers with a separate tweeter to get the highs. Does anyone know where to get full range woofers, or is sub just the new way to say woofer, and if not, will a sub get the mids I need? PS my reciever needs no more than 100 watts, as the ones I used to have were 50 each, combined 100, and all woofers I see are at least 200 watts EACH, odd...

Sadly, I read your post twice, but I have no idea what you're asking. What exactly are you trying to accomplish?

I nominate this thread for the HOF!!

I'm not sure what you're driving at, but I think an 18" speaker gives you everything you want and rolls off all the annoying high end that you don't. They do take a bit of power however.

What I mean is that my 70's speaker blew and I cant find the right kind of replacement, there are no full range speakers I can find, just subs. Would a sub put out enough mids without help?

a sub is not a good choice to use as a replacement for a full range driver. check with parts express or us speaker and you should be able to find yourself a good replacement but you will need to know as much about the original drivers specifications (the Thiele and Small parameters. as possible..)

Parts Experess=Great idea! Found a decent set and it will only cost just over a hundred dollars to respeaker, and just because they are cheap don't mean they'll sound bad, most of the time when you pay alot of money for new speakers in a cab, you pay mainly for a well designed cab, buying just the woofers for an old cab that is well designed is alot cheaper, and sounds just as good. I never would have guessed that my speakers were redone in the 90s with cheapo 12 dollar woofers, they sounded great untill I pushed them too hard (Way overpowered them). Thanks, I really appriciate it. I guess regular retail stores are out of their minds just selling subs...
