Warning: following story contains stupidity, but IT IS bass related. Do not attempt. Mod please move if this isn't the right forum.
Some of you (yeah right) might remember that I recently acquired a Godin SD with a frozen adjusting nut. Well, I never could get the damn thign off.
Tonight, we celebrated the return of a friend from a long trip in Asia. It was fun. Beer was had in copious quantites.
This leads us to myself arriving at 2:45 after taking a cab and having the magic idea of trying to get my nut off (bad pun I know). The bass looked at me when I hung my coat, almost pleading me to repair it:
"Help me!"
"Alright then"
I was liquored up, tired and now pissed after the stupid thing. What could go wrong ? After taking the neck off, I tried every hex key that would fit in that hole, even a stupid Sears one that came with a threadmill my mother bought years ago. No luck. Then it came to me: I'll just bash the biggest one I have into the hole with a hammer. 10 minutes later, the key was very much in the adjusting nut. I then began to turn, locking the bass neck in a vice jaw.
No dice. Need more lever. I took a plumbing tube and used that to force the hex key.
The nut gave out in one glorious shot, squealing to death like a bleeding pig ! Finally, I had triumphed ! I examined the threads and sure enough, the clown that had it before me had:
a) Backed the nut so tightly into the hole that it had ran out of threads.
b) Used some kind of white gooey matter to "lubricate the threads".
I can't wait to go buy washers tomorrow at the hardware store ! Yipee! I was almost going to sell this bass for 100$ (pity since it sounds so good), now I guess it'll be a keeper.
PS: Don't anyone try to replicate my success. I would have been hosed had the allen key broke or the truss rod-end snapped off. Take it to a luthier. |
