Not unprecedented - remember David Geffen sued Neil Young in the mid-80s for wilfully making "unrepresentative" albums. The case was thrown out.

This is why I hope record companies all fail and collapse. Download music, destroy these companies, and have bands selling their own music, which has been proven to work (NIN did it like a mother****er with TWO great CDs)

If there contract had them putting out a certain amount of albums before it expired and they didn't produce then its a pretty cut and dry breach of contract. It's a horrible way to do business and just encourages people to pump out crap but if that's what they want to do then that's what they want to do.

Can't be weirder than when John Fogerty was sued for sounding too much like himself.

Breach of contract, not that uncommon to sue someone for it.

I wonder if they couldv'e dodged the lawsuit by using that ever famous stalling tactic of the 1970's that saved some artists signed to deliver x-amount of albums but no new tunes were coming forth for them that were worth a spit, with the infamous...' Oh yeah we were thinking that a live album would go over great with our fans! What do ya think? '

I can understand the lawsuit. But $30 million? I assume that figure includes more than damages, because I can't see three 30 Seconds to Mars albums generating that much in profit (or even revenues) for the company.

Hmm, we wanted to sue Virgin for neglecting to promote our album as promised, but our manager said that those are hard to prove. But labels can sue you if you put out an "unrepresentative" album. In the end, atleast the new people at Virgin realized that we had a really good album, but got a raw deal, so they let us keep our masters. Matt Serletic has to be the worst label head ever!

Come on, 30 Seconds to Mars is a business venture, they breached contract. It's a movie star's pop band that factory fits rock tunes for radio consumption.

IOW, who cares... it's completely self contained within corporate america.

Indeed.

Before that, The Rolling Stones final product offered to London Records was the infamous unreleased "C***sucker Blues".
