Suffered a big set-back yesterday...

I was out cutting grass and had just finished the back yard. I bent down to adjust the deck height on the mower for the front yard and put my hand down to support myself. As soon as I touched the mower, I burned my finger tips off on the exhaust! My fingers stuck to it like raw meat sticking to a hot frying pan! I have 3rd degree burns across my index, middle and ring fingers on my fretting (left) hand. So, needless to say, I'm done playing bass for a while. Good thing the band parted ways recently!

Just throw some crazy glue on them fingers and be on your way!!

In all seriousness, though, I wish you a speedy recovery and hope you
can get back to playing asap, buddy.

What a bummer! Now might be a good time for a little theory study and some "mental musical gymnastics".
There is still a lot you can do to move yourself forward if you want to.
You can memorize arpeggio and riff patterns, memorize fretboard notes and positions. Di sect chords and memorize the note positions. Practice "ear training", intervals, and transposition. And generally dig into music theory.
You will be better soon and back in the game.

I heard lawnmower and my heart sunk. Thank god your fingertips will grow back eventually (can't quite be said for choppin em off at the joint!) I've burned myself pretty bad on a lawnmower exhaust as well, sneaky bugger should have a warning stamped on it or something!

I really hate burns.
I hope the burns heal quickly and don't leave much scarring.

Now might be a good time to practice up on that theory

Argh...theory...my only weakness!

I might actually take up building FX. It's not too far off from my day job in the instrumentation and process control world.

If my left hand was temporarily incapacitated, I think I'd be spending alot of time at the computer exercising my right hand

I know, terribly. Sorry in advance.

I read as far as lawnmower and an image of a bloody stump was the first thing that came to my mind. Phew, burns will heal and you'll be allright. Theory and transcriptions and you'll be a better player by the time they heal.

I wonder if this could happen to me - I'm used to pick-up hot plates directly from the oven bare handed due to heavy, heavy calluses on my fingertips.... ;-)

I also envisioned some horrible chopped off appendage. Glad to hear it's only burns, even though I'm sure it's painful, it will get better. Hope you have a quick and as pain free recovery as possible.

Don't think ya wanna compare a bare muffler 3 inches from the combustion chamber with a hot plate at a restaurant....do the plates glow red in the dark?

Sorry to hear this. I hope you heal quickly. This is one of the reasons I never do any yard work without gloves. You just never know. Burns, cuts, bug bites, poison ivy; better safe than sorry.
