Suggest a gig bag for a Bongo 5'r.

Sign in to disble this ad
My head is spinning from gig bag research. Could anyone suggest a bag that is thick (at least 1" of foam both sides) plush interior, durable zipper, padded shoulder strap and hardware that wont harm the finish on my bass? Do the Levy leather bags meet my criteria? I have a Bass Centre double bag (by Undercover?) that has what I want, but I don't need the "double" feature. Need something of quality.

Thanks, p5

Stay away from the contego- the zippers are ridiculously bad. Mine has to go back to protec to get fixed. I am sorry I chose that one, I should have waited a little to get either an incase or the igig. I think in a gig bag you definitely get what you pay for. Contego is a great design that is just manufactured cheaply, had they used better hardware it would be great.

I recently got a Body Glove Bag that I think is great. A great bag that doesn't cost too much is the one carried by GC. They are 59.99 before tax and have serious padding.

I have a Contego and haven't had a problem but I have only had it for about 4 months.

For my second bass, I am considering getting a Mono M-80. It looks pretty nice.

I like the Contego so far, and it seems very protective, but I was surprised that the zippers aren't more heavy-duty. I foresee some issues with that in the future.

Mono bags are great but they hang too high when used as backpack.
IGIG bags are much better and less expensive IMO.

The contego is probably okay if you are VERY careful. Mine unfortunately is often stuffed into a truck between PA equipment, etc, and I store a bunch of stuff that maxes out the pockets (a bass stand just barely fits in the pocket in the front, a slightly better zipper would work well there). But the main zipper on mine separated from the bag on the bottom, where the bag would rest if you put it on the floor. Protec is going to fix it under warranty, but unfortunately that means I have to mail it to them to fix. I will say though that the bag is pretty light and is very comfortable to wear. But when I can afford to do so I will probably be investing in a better bag- the igig looks very nice.

I'm starting to take lessons and found that my Bongo 5 also will not fit correctly in my regular gig bag.

Do these bags referenced all fit the longer Bongos?

I concur, I like mine very much, and so does my Bongo.

As much as I like the IGIGs, I may have to check out the Bodyglove. I'd buy a top o the line bag now, but I'm saving up for an eub.

Ended up with the Body Glove Hybrid. It's a well made bag, with loads of protection, sturdy zippers at the top edge of the bag and plenty of room for my bass. Cons: the straps are wimpy and the handle placement causes the bass neck to dip down when carrying it. Also, beacause of its stiff reinforcements, the treb and hi mid control pots, will bend But there's something I like about this bag....it's really tough! I'm thinking about removing the straps and stitching on a longer single strap. As for the the pressure on the tone pots, I have fashioned a dense foam bolster, that conforms to the lower bout of the body, thus keeping pressure off the controls....this will be covered in a soft material and velcro to hold it in place. yeah I know, spend the extra $'s and buy a bag with better appointments. But I love tweakin' stuff, this one will work!
