Suggestions for an audio programming language to learn?

Sign in to disble this ad
Just as a pastime, I'd like to learn an audio programming language.
Something in the vein of Csound. Something that allows me to create and modify audio signals.

I know my way around a fair few programming languages (I'm a Computer Science & Engineering student), so even if some language you suggest is technically complicated, it shouldn't really be an issue.

Anybody with any experience in this field?

For a graphic language, Pure Data or MAX/MSP are probably the best known. I've messed around with Pure Data a bit.

For text-based, CSound has always seemed daunting, but if you're a CS student that really doesn't matter. SuperCollider and ChucK look interesting.

You may want to check out the programming forums at Electro-Music.com and KVR.

Thanks a lot! Regarding text based languages such as Csound and ChucK, I like the fact that they are focused on operations with audio, unlike graphic languages such as PD and MAX/MSP which are for multimedia as a whole. In any case, I seem to like text based languages more than graphic ones. Just feel more comfortable for some reason. Also, Csound, ChucK and PD are free so obviously I'd prefer them (over MAX/MSP)
