Suggestions for NYC music shopping trip

Sign in to disble this ad
I'll be in the Big Apple next week with some time to kill and would like to do some music store browsing/shopping. Haven't been in about 15 years so looking for tips on where to go, any special places, etc.

Is 48th Street still the place to go? Last time it was Manny's, Rudy's, Sam Ash etc.

Any other interesting neighborhoods, smaller shops, boutique places?

I'm focusing on though not limited to good bass places but I also play guitar and am a tube amp and effects geek as well.

Thanks!

I politely advise not using the term "big apple" while in New York. It makes most of us New Yorker's roll our eyes and say "Oh Eeeeyeahzz???" even more belligerently than usual. Just a thought.

I second Rudy's, Manny's and Sadowsky. You might also check out craigslist:

Understand. Same as when people come here and say
"Frisco" That means I send them to Fisherman's Wharf.

If you want to hop on the subway, take a ride out to Main Drag Music in Brooklyn.

Take the ferry to Mandolin Brothers on Staten Island. Their selection of basses isn't huge, but I think that trip qualifies as a musician's pilgrimage.

If you are in Manhattan and pressed for time, just hang out on 48th street. That's what I did about a month ago. Between Manny's, Rudy's, and Sam Ash, I saw Sadowskys, MTDs, Foderas, Godlyke, Lakland, Warwicks, Fender Custom Shop, and Pensas.

I am from NY and I have never rolled my eyes at someone calling it the "big apple". I do like it when people call it "the" city because it is after all "the" best city in the world ;-)

Rudy's was closed the last two times I was out there; hoping for better luck next time.

Check out Pedal Geek. www.pedalgeek.com
It's 2 blocks away from the New Hyde Park train station on Long Island, which is about a 10 minute trip from Penn Station.

I went last week and visited 30th street, rogue and Rudy's. 30th street was amazing in terms of shear volume and quality of gear. Very guitar focused but a decent collection of used P and J basses. Tons of pedals, nice amps. Rogue, which is just a couple doors down, didn't have much of anything unless I missed some back room or something. Mostly recording and DJ stuff with a couple of instruments behind the counter. Rudy's was amazing with 3 floors of intruments. 1st had new and old solid body electrics, 2nd was all acoustics and 3rd was the bass room. Some older used Fender, Fodera, Fbass and Modulus were a few I remembered. Got a chance to finally hear a Bergatino AE12 before I had to rush out and meet my wife.

Thanks for all the tips. Can't wait to go back again and spend more time.
