Is it smaller than the one in Anaheim? I want to go check it out, is it worth it? |

I used to manage a guitar store, and here's my take on the show. It's a business. It's not a product display for fans and wanna-be's. I hated not being able to get my hands on a new product and discussing it with my sales rep because some pin-head is spending twenty minutes using his Guitar Center chops on the rig. The music store people are there to learn about products, and to do business.
It's cool to meet people (I've met Entwistle, Freebo, Billy Sheann, Carol Kaye, Jeff Berlin, George Van Eps, Vivan Campbell, Joe Pass, Ray Brown, Mel Bay, Leo Fender, Bill Schultz, Hartley Peavey, and a host of others.). It's cool to see new gear (I talked to Ned Steinberger the first year he was there- sharing a booth with Mandolin Bros. and we talked the day before Andy West put them on the map. On Saturday most people thought the Steinberger was a joke or a toy. On Sunday (after the Dregs concert on Saturday night) his booth was swamped.
But is it worth it? Yeah, if you're respectful of the show's purpose and intentions, and if you're interested in seeing and learning new stuff. It's not just a hang and it's not a place to get in the way of the business.

I just want to try some stuff, talk to some builders about what they do, and give myself a frame of reference for all the different makers out there. I've only ever played maybe three boutique instruments in my life, and one of them I own.
If the hang is happenin' and not impeding business then I'd also want to participate there. I don't want to be "that guy" wanking while people are trying to do business, but from what I've heard from friends going, the network there is great. |

I don't plan on playing a whole lot, just me and my little camera. But feel free to get in a "slap off" with Marcus while your down there. I know Tom does every year. It sends Marcus scurrying back to the wood-shead. His people have banned the video.
