and given a certain level of versatility in this "universal system" do you think that would
1) Generally improve musicianship
2) Generally hinder musicianship
**PLEASE NOTE: I am referring to music making, and not the actual sound/tonal qualities!** |

Thoughts on brands? Squier or Sadowsky? Behringer or or Bergantino?

| | | | It depends partly on the instrument itself; some people can play a warwick six string broadneck, other's can't stand the feel of a warwick.
The feeling on the bass is a significant factor with technique.
Though, I would certainly love to see how everyone performs on the same bass. The ideal instrument for this idea, if you ask me, would be a Fender Jazz bass.
It's not like I'm not open to other suggestions, though.

if the action was super-low it would hinder those who are used to digging in old-school Jamerson style,
conversely if the action was high then double-thumbers and general fast players would be hindered. |

There's a reason you play the bass you play through the amp (and the effects) you do, and hopefully it has to do with getting as close as you can to the sound your mind's ear hears when you think "Bass tone." Not everyone wants the same bass tone so not everyone plays the same bass. |

I tend to agree with this statement. Our minds can create far more sounds and tonal combinations than we can do physically with our basses and amps. The variety of available sounds from basses, amps and effects, effectively expands our tonal pallet so we may better emulate what we create with our minds.
