I'll have to pull out "Piper At The Gates Of Dawn" to listen to tonight.
Is there a biography of Syd available?

That's a terrible shame. I hope he went peacefully.

I tried to make sense of the article in the link but was confused. I knew Syd was an original member and was under the impression that David Gilmour was his replacement. THe article referred to Gilmour as both Syd's replacement and as an original member. Did one of them start on keys or bass, maybe? I guess I'm asking for a summary of the Pink Floyd family tree.

Syd started flipping out after Piper was done, so they brought in Gilmore to record some stuff for Saucer. Syd was still in the band, but going downhill fast. They knew he wasnt going to last when they brought in Gilmore, who took over full time when Syd went off the deep end so to speak. Syd has a couple songs on Saucer, but aside from those few, and Piper, thats all he did with the band recording wise.

I think they mistakenly referred to "David Gilmour" instead of "Roger Waters" as a founding member of the band.

(just posted this in the Syd thread in Off Topic...)

"Oh where are you now
pussy willow that smiled on this leaf?
When I was alone you promised the stone from your heart
my head kissed the ground
I was half the way down, treading the sand
please, please, lift a hand
I'm only a person whose armbands beat
on his hands, hang tall
won't you miss me?
Wouldn't you miss me at all?

"The poppy birds way
swing twigs coffee brands around
brandish her wand with a feathery tongue
my head kissed the ground
I was half the way down, treading the sand
please, please, please lift the hand
I'm only a person with Eskimo chain
I tattooed my brain all the way...
Won't you miss me?
Wouldn't you miss me at all?"

-Dark Globe

RIP Syd...

Oh man, this is very sad news! 60 is way too early to go. He had been sick, but I hope his last years were peaceful. I'll always thank him for starting up and contributing to one of the best rock bands ever to walk the earth.

RIP Syd Barrett

Shine on you Crazy Diamond

Remember when you were young, you shone like the sun.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Now there's a look in your eyes, like black holes in the sky.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
You were caught on the cross fire of childhood and stardom,
blown on the steel breeze.
Come on you target for faraway laughter, come on you stranger,
you legend, you martyr, and shine!

You reached for the secret too soon, you cried for the moon.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Threatened by shadows at night, and exposed in the light.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Well you wore out your welcome with random precision,
rode on the steel breeze.
Come on you raver, you seer of visions, come on you painter,
you piper, you prisoner, and shine!

Nobody knows where you are, how near or how far.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Pile on many more layers and I'll be joining you there.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
And we'll bask in the shadow of yesterday's triumph,
and sail on the steel breeze.
Come on you boy child, you winner and loser,
come on you miner for truth and delusion, and shine!

I was curious about that. I THOUGHT Roger was there from the beginning. But again, I wasn't confident.

Actually, the only member to be in every incarnation of PF is Nick Mason.

RIP Syd.
