Gday every one

I imagine this is a question mostly for the aussies out there but any body interested please feel free to post.

Im currently in my final year of high school and starting to ponder my future. My ideal Uni course would be Jazz performance at the conservaturium of music in sydney.

This is just a request for any information and opinons about this course from any one who has done it or knows someont who has done it or is doing it or anything...
If you know something about it please chip in.

My main concern is that i will spend the next 4 years of my life walking and playing four notes to a bar, which dosent sound like the kind of thing i really want to do.

So any info would be greatly appriciated
Also any hints on passing the audition would be great too.

Thanks to every one in advanced

Muel

Well, you could do what i'm doing and study something else at university while getting private lessons from a good teacher. chances are you will learn more about the bass and music and a lot quicker with a good teacher than you will studying music at university.

I worked for years with a guy who played both keyboards and trumpet who did this course. He was possibly one of the most musically talented people I've ever met. His knowledge of theory was amazing, his sight reading was world class, and his improvised solo's on both instruments were phenomenal.

That said, he was not good at all at learning songs by ear, even when he had a recording of it. He kinda played EVERYTHING jazzy, even rock songs. But the worst thing was the way the con taught his whole class to imediately hate anything that was written after 1939. They were also taught to openly detest all forms of current music without exception.

As a result he was simultanously the best and worst musician I ever worked with, somethimes within the same song.

Most people who do the course become music teachers. If you decide to do the course, try to complement it with other activities that will give you more musical balance.
