"syllables" Is THIS my own playing style? or others too?

I've been playing for 7 years in mostly church/praise&worship bands. I've taken about three half hour lessons in this time. as you might guess my progress has been slow ( since I started when I was 33). When I play songs we use "chord sheets" (lyrics with notes above certrain words)

Anyway I usually find myself gravitating towards playing the particular note or repeat the note on the syllables of the lyrics. Is this just me? is this o.k.?

P.s. I never learned scales, I keep telling myself to practice them, but not totally sure how to go about it correctly.

P.P.S. out of the three bass players, both of them seem to know more theory than me, people like to play with me the best?!?! My bass playing friend says I know how to play in the "pocket". (but I have both hands on my guitar! sorry couldn't resist!!)
