Synths and laptops

I'm waiting for my Dell laptop and I just realized that instead of buying a synth, I can get some software and a keyboard. Are there generic keyboards that I can buy that work with software or is it all software/controller specific?

They are generic. You plug them in and they look like a midi keyboard to your software. Some of them will extra knobs and buttons may have templates that work with some software, for example transport keys to act like a tape recorder, and a set of faders for the software. The dell is probably not going to have a great sound card, so some kb's come with audio interfaces also. You can even record and sample with them.

M-Audio audio/midi interfaces
Ederol PCR-1
Alesis Photon

But this line-6 looks to coolest looking:

but it's not out yet

Ok. So if I go to Clavia's website and it says that the Nord software needs a special controller, that's not really true and I can use anything?

Well, Nord may have set it up so that certain keyboards extract more features and work smoother...

I have a Oxygen8, and I use all sorts of soft synths.

the secret is that there are many out there that are free, or very cheap. Some mfg's charge a lot.

Awesome. Thanks for the info. By the way, I ordered an Inspiron 9400. However, I upgraded the screen, video card and processor as I do digital photography too. I just got it today!

Those British Computer Music mags, Future Music, etc. come with DVD's and CD's that will really help get you started. Full recording software, soft synths, demos, loops, etc...
